A business simulation structured around the use
of dice - ordinary spot dice and special WHURP dice. In its simplest form
the exercise concentrates on examining some basic economic relationships and illustrating
why companies need to balance production and marketing to achieve success. In
its more advanced form it creates a competitive situation between teams in which
the more successful ones can take over the less successful ones and groups of
companies can be created. The exercise is designed for groups of 1-6 members and
comes complete with enough materials for 10 groups. The exercise needs between
one and three hours depending on the level of sophistication required.
OBJECTIVE
The exercise will;
- demonstrate the basic concepts of business economics;
- show the necessity of a financial plan that keeps
production and marketing in balance;
- improve decision making by identifying the variables
that need to be considered and by forcing constant re-examination of a changing
environment.
HOW IT WORKS
The tutor can either introduce the game and go through one round with the players
in unison or allow them to read the players instructions and launch straight
into the exercise with the players acting individually or in teams. The players
will need to make decisions about production and marketing and devise an integrated
strategy that will allow for economic production, adequate sales volume and profitable
results. The game progresses through a number of rounds in which the players make
decisions, compare the actual situation with the expected one, and calculate their
financial results. Included in the game is a take-over mechanism which allows
a team whose cash is greater then the cash plus stock value of another team to
take it over. This creates a group of companies in which the manager is responsible
for determining the group's strategy and preparing the consolidated results.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS WILL BE DOING
Assessing the probable outcomes of allowed dice throws and deciding which to opt
for in the present circumstances of their imaginary company. Depending on their
degree of success, seeking to take over other companies or resist being taken
over. In later stages of the game, directing the affairs of a group of companies
or operating a member company.
FOR WHAT LEVELS IS IT APPROPRIATE?
As an exercise in business economics suitable for junior managers. As an exercise
in competitive strategy and inter-personal communication suitable for all levels.
