| A simulation involving a battery
of representative tasks designed to give participants practice at organising and
operating as a team. The tasks are not work related but are chosen to encourage
a relaxed unthreatening atmosphere. They are varied in nature, to ensure that
all participants will be able to contribute. The challenge for each team is to
identify the abilities of each team member, give the most suitable tasks to individuals,
pairs or triads, monitor progress, and amend the strategy if problems are encountered.
The exercise is designed for groups of 5-12 members and comes complete with enough
materials for three groups. It needs between one and a half and three hours depending
on how the exercise is structured.
OBJECTIVE
The exercise will:
- provide experience in organising team resources;
- encourage mutual respect by allowing team members
to reveal their individual skills and abilities;
- promote group identity through the sharing of
an enjoyable team activity.
HOW IT WORKS
The tutor examines the list of 21 tasks supplied with the package and selects
those which are most relevant to the audience and time available. The list includes
numerate tasks; creative tasks; physical tasks; judgmental tasks and knowledge
based tasks. Most are indoor tasks: a few are outdoor. Once the tasks have been
selected the tutor can introduce the exercise and ask the teams to discuss their
skills and interests. He/She will then reveal the task list and allow a fixed
time for planning Who does what and devising the control methods to
be used. As each task is completed the team submits it to the tutor for marking
(Pre-determined answers are provided). The successful completion of a task entitles
the team to points which are added together to give a grand total at the end of
the exercise.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS WILL BE DOING
Examining an assortment of point-scoring tasks to decide which they should attempt,
given the skills and abilities within their group. Carrying out the selected tasks
individually or in small groups. This may mean mental activity (sitting around
a table) or agility (building something) or outdoor activity, depending on the
tasks chosen.
