| A package of ten separate and unrelated
tasks all designed to assist the getting to know you process and appropriate
for the start of a course or conference. They vary in complexity and some are
also suitable for longer concept-communicating and skill-development sessions.
The number of people involved varies with each task, usually groups of 4 - 6,
as does the time which may be anything from 15 minutes to one hour. Where materials
are provided there are enough for 3 groups.
OBJECTIVE
The package provides the tutor with a variety of exercises all of which can be
used to:
- assist delegates in the storming
phase of team development;
- help break down barriers to participation by
creating familiarity between delegates.
HOW IT WORKS
Each task is designed to be used as an alternative to the round robin introduction
approach to the start of a course or conference. By participating in an exercise
participants learn about the personalities, competencies and characteristics of
their fellow-delegates. They create understandings and relationships and break
down pre-course inhibitions. The purpose of providing ten exercises is to allow
the tutor choice, so that at least one item will prove suitable in any situation. The
precise steps of play will vary depending on which task is chosen and what the
objective is. Simple tasks designed merely to break the ice will need
little introduction or wrap up. The more complex ones will benefit from a brief
introduction and a plenary session to draw out any possible learning.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS WILL BE DOING
All the exercises will involve the group in discussing alternative view points
and building understanding and consensus while attempting to complete the given
task.
FOR WHAT LEVELS IS IT APPROPRIATE?
Any group of people wishing to cooperate in the short or longer term.
