Acid Test

An abstract exercise using a mining analogy in which players must share their perception about a problem, interpret the available facts, and then put their plan into action.

The exercise allows for instant and objective feedback. If the players have made the correct assumptions then it is immediately obvious. If their assumptions are incorrect they need to regroup and re-plan.

Designed for groups of 3-6 members and comes complete with enough materials for two groups.

The time requirement will depend on the specific method of use. As an exercise in decision making and communication it will need between 30 and 90 minutes. If it is used to examine performance and develop a review process it will need up to two hours.

Objective

To provide participants with an immediate, shared and enjoyable experience of problem solving that will serve as the base for performance analysis and the discussion of inter-personal behaviour. It will:

  • Provide participants with practise in group problem solving and decision making;
  • Highlight the barriers that prevent effective communication;
  • Provide material with which to practice reviews.

How it works

The tutor introduces the exercise and gives each team a puzzle and clue. The puzzle consists of a plinth in which there are twenty three holes filled with coloured counters. These fit so closely that only the colour of the top one can be seen. The team's task is to uncover twelve red counters. The clue suggesting where to search is ambiguous, being capable of several interpretations, all of which suggest a different strategy. Group members are, therefore, likely to place individual interpretations on the clue and argue for different strategies without realising that they do not fully understand each other's position. Teams are scored by the number of excavations they make in their search for twelve red counters.

What participants will be doing

Confronting a problem situation in which the actions chosen may or may not bring a benefit. Arguing about alternative possibilities and immediately experiencing the result of the one chosen. Examining how the group approached the task, reviewing performance and developing a review process applicable to their own work environment.

For what levels is it appropriate?

As an exercise in communication and problem solving it is suitable for all supervisors and managers. As an exercise in performance review it is suitable for everyone who wishes to learn from past experiences.
